The Auckland metropolitan area in the North Island of New Zealand, is the largest and the most populous
urban area in the country with a population approaching 1.4 million residents, 31 percent of the country's
population. Demographic trends indicate that it will continue to grow faster than the rest of the country.
ニュージランド北島旅行記
1990年4月、ニュージランド北島に飛ぶ。オークランド空港で レンタカーを借り北のレインガ岬に向う。途中の
海岸で海鳥の群れに餌を与える。ホテル際にバナナの垂れ下がるのを見て、ここは亜熱帯の地であると実感する。
途中の泥道で対向車を避けるためハンドルを左に切った瞬間、道からずれ落ちてしまったが、その対向車の乗員
全員が車から降り、私共の車を持ち上げ元の道に戻して呉れた。その先に、水中を走る場所があり、Low Gearで
進行したものの、車ごと水没の危険を感じ急いで陸地に戻る。道路際にはポプラの木立が並んでいたが、牛の
群れの通過を知らせる旗で一旦停止する。北端の レインガ岬に到着。岬の先端に東京やロンドンへの方向と距離が
表示されており、改めて今立っている地球上の地点を再認識する。
南太平洋に面した海岸から見る夕焼けは素晴らしい。 この後、北島を南下するが途中、シダの木の生い茂る地帯を
通過 する。オークランド・ハーバー橋を過ぎるとすぐ、オークランド 市内に入る。市内を一旦通り過ぎ、温泉で
有名なロトルアに到着。数多くの温泉の地中から噴き出す間欠泉や泥火山が広がる地熱地帯を見ながら、先住民族
マオリの文化が色濃く残るファカレワレワの彫像を観光する。貸し切りの温泉施設も利用した。 更に南下したら、
NZ全島で催されるアンザックデーパレードに遭遇した。小さな町だが多くの住民が参加して祭りを盛り上げていた。
驚いたのはその後、道路を多分、野生と思われる馬が堂々と路上を歩いていたことだ。南太平洋の夕暮れは
素晴らしい。最後にオークランド市内に戻り、動物園などに寄った後は、航空機で帰宅の途に就いた。
In April 1990, I flew to New Zealand's North Island. I rented a car at Auckland Airport and headed north to Cape Reinga.
The appearance of seabirds on the coast made me wonder what they were feeding on. Seeing bananas hanging by the
hotel, I realized I was in a subtropical region. Poplar trees lined the road, but we stopped briefly at a flag announcing
the passing of a herd of cows. We arrived at Cape Reinga, the northernmost point. At the tip of the cape, the direction
and distance to Tokyo and London were displayed, reminding us once again of where we were standing on Earth.
The sunset seen from the coast facing the South Pacific was magnificent. After this, we head south through the North Island,
passing through a densely populated area of ferns along the way. Just after passing the Auckland Harbour Bridge, we enter
Auckland City. After passing through the city, we arrive in Rotorua, famous for its hot springs. We see geothermal areas
with numerous hot springs erupting from the ground, geysers, and mud volcanoes, and visit the Whakarewarewa Carvings.
A site that strongly reflects the culture of the indigenous Maori people. We also rented a hot spring facility. Further south,
we encountered the Anzac Day parade, which is held across the New Zealand island. It was a small town, but many residents
participated and made the celebration a success. What surprised us was that afterward, we saw what appeared to be wild
horses walking boldly down the road. The sunset in the South Pacific is magnificent. Finally, we returned to Auckland,
visited the zoo and other places, and then boarded a plane to fly home.
