New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically
comprises two main landmasses -that of the North Island, and the South Island, and numerous ]
smaller islands. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans.
During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive bio-diversity of animal, fungal and
plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern
Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions.
New Zealand's capital is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
ニュージーランドは南西太平洋に浮かぶ島国です。地理的には、北島と南島の二つの主要な陸地と、多数の
小さな島々で構成されています。その隔絶された地理的条件から、ニュージーランドは人類が最後に定住し
た土地の一つでした。 長年にわたる孤立の中で、ニュージーランドは動物、菌類、植物といった独特な生物
多様性を育んできました。変化に富んだ地形と、サザンアルプスのような険しい山々は、地殻変動による
隆起と火山噴火によるところが大きいです。
ニュージーランドの首都はウェリントンで、人口が最も多い都市はオークランドです。

In December 2004, New Zealand prohibited smoking in all indoor public places. A complete smoking ban
n the country has been well accepted by the public. This fact supports that a partial smoking ban in a public
place is seriously inadequate in terms of protecting the public health from toxic second-hand smoke.
ニュージーランドは2004年12月、すべての屋内公共施設での喫煙を禁止しました。国内における全面禁煙は国民に
広く受け入れられています。この事実は、公共施設における部分的な禁煙は、有害な受動喫煙から公衆衛生を守る
という観点から、極めて不十分であることを裏付けています。

南島と北島とをあわせても日本の国土よりもやや小さな国、ニュージランド
オーストラリア大陸からも離れ、日本よりの飛行時間は南島クライストチャーチまで11時間以上と意外に
遠い国だ。英国連邦一員として今の国旗は1901年からそのまま使用されている。2004年12月に
レストラン・カフェ・バーの全面禁煙を国の政策として実行したことは広く知られている。白雪を抱く山々、
透明な湖、咲き乱れるルピナスとエニシダなど数々の花々、その大自然と調和するかのように、室内では
タバコの汚染されていないきれいな空気に包まれている。
今回の旅行の主要な目的は、南半球で室内空間での喫煙規制をいち早く実行したニュージランドの実態を
探ることにあった。今回は南島をレンタカーで走り、東西と南北に走る列車も利用した。調査の対象は、
空港、鉄道、ホテル、ゲストハウスなどの宿泊設備、レストラン、バーなどの飲食店で、南島のほとんどの
地域を訪ね歩いた。帰路、北島、オークランド市内や空港の喫煙規制状況も確認した。
