New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically
comprises two main landmasses -that of the North Island, and the South Island, and numerous ]
smaller islands. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans.

During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive bio-diversity of animal, fungal and
plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern
Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions.

New Zealand's capital is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.



In December 2004, New Zealand prohibited smoking in all indoor public places. A complete smoking ban
n the country has been well accepted by the public. This fact supports that a partial smoking ban in a public
place is seriously inadequate in terms of protecting the public health from toxic second-hand smoke.

南島と北島とをあわせても日本の国土よりもやや小さな国、ニュージランド
オーストラリア大陸からも離れ、日本よりの飛行時間は南島クライストチャーチまで11時間以上と意外に遠い国だ。英国
連邦一員として今の国旗は1901年からそのまま使用されている。2004年12月にレストラン・カフェ・バーの全面禁煙を
国の政策として実行したことは広く知られている。白雪を抱く山々、透明な湖、咲き乱れるルピナスとエニシダなど数々
の花々、その大自然と調和するかのように、室内ではタバコの汚染されていないきれいな空気に包まれている。

今回の旅行の主要な目的は、南半球で室内空間での喫煙規制をいち早く実行したニュージランドの実態を探ることにあった。
今回は南島をレンタカーで走り、東西と南北に走る列車も利用した。調査の対象は、空港、鉄道、ホテル、ゲストハウス
などの宿泊設備、レストラン、バーなどの飲食店で、南島のほとんどの地域を訪ね歩いた。帰路、北島、オークランド市内
や空港の喫煙規制状況も確認した。
