Massachusetts imposed tough smoking ban.
In July 2004, the state of Massachusetts banned smoking in all workplaces, including restaurants and bars.
Smokers face a $100 fine for each violation, and business owners who allow smoking in their establishment
face fines of up to $300.

The State of Maine is located in the northeastern United States, with the Atlantic Ocean in the east.
It is known for its scenery its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, and its heavily forested interior
as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams. The largest city is Portland and the capital is Augusta.
Estimated total population is about 1,300,000 in 2008.

The sate of Maine has been banned smoking in restaurants since September 1999. State government prohibited
smoking in bars in January 2004.

Maine promotes smoke-free air policies to tourists.
Maine is using highway signs to promote its smoke-free air ordinance in public buildings as another reason for vacationers
to visit the state. The signs are intended to promote awareness among both visitors and residents of Maine, who aren't
familiar with the state's smoking restrictions.

Maine Bans Smoking While Driving with Youths
The state of Maine passed one of the most restrictive smoking bans in the United States.The action by the Bangor
City Council is to ban smoking in cars in which children under 18 are passengers, and to permit police to stop a car
if an adult is smoking while a child is a passenger. The smoking driver can be fined $50. The ordinance is aimed at
protecting children from secondhand smoke. The law came into effect in September 2008.
Portland City, Maine Bans Smoking Outside at Restaurants.
The new state law bans smoking in outdoor dining areas. That includes restaurants, bars and snack bars.
The law is modeled after Portland's smoke-free outdoor dining ordinance. After September 2009,
smokers will not be able to light up when they are eating or drinking outside at restaurants.
