Ueno Toshogu Shrine, Tokyo
Ueno Toshogu is a shrine of Shinto, Japan's ethnic religion. After the
death of Tokugawa Iyeyasu,
the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunnate, he was enshrined at Nikko while
Todoh Takakura,
his vassal, established Ueno Toshogu in 1627 on his premises in honor of
Ieyasu.
Existing shrine structure was rebuilt in 1651 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the
third Shogun and grandson
of Ieyasu, in style of 'gonge-tukuri'. a typical architectural style of
the Edo period.
