Canberra
Canberra is the capital of Australia. With a population of ca. 381,000,
it is Australia's largest inland city
and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern
end of the Australian Capital Territory
(ACT), i.e., 280 km south-west of Sydney, and 660 km north-east of Melbourne.

As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the site of Parliament
House, the High Court and
numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of
many social and cultural
institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial,
National Museum and the
National Library, and Australian National University.

The City of Canberra
As the city has a high proportion of public servants, the federal government
contributes the largest
percentage of Gross State Product and is the largest single employer in
Canberra. As the seat of
government, the unemployment rate is lower and the average income is higher
than the national
average, while property prices are relatively high, in part due to comparatively
restricted develop-
ment regulations.

Canberra: Capital was planned from graphic thinking.
The Canberra Central district is substantially based on Walter Burley Griffin's
designs. In 1967, the
National Capital Development Commission adopted the 'Y Plan', which laid-out
future urban develop-
ment in Canberra around a series of central shopping and commercial area
known as the 'town-
centres' linked by freeways. The layout roughly resembled the shape of
the letter Y.
It appears one of the most difficult to drive in the world. Almost entire
road is curved and convoluted,
with a lot of the round-about intersection. It is hard to remember how
to drive without a time loss.
The road is not constructedto drive without confusion. A traveler who visited
here needs the time to
get familiar with the road map. The biggest drawback is the city designer
planned the distribution
of roads from the view point from air, but not on the ground. My impression
is truly a labyrinth.
