ウクライナは、東ヨーロッパに位置する共和制国家。首都はキーウ。東はロシア連邦、北はベラルーシ、西はポーランド、
スロバキア、ハンガリー、西南はルーマニア、モルドバと国境を接しており、南は黒海に面し、トルコなどと向かい合う。
人口は、2021年時点で約4150万人（ロシア支配下のクリミア半島を除く）で、ヨーロッパで7番目に人口の多い国である。
2022年2月のロシアによる侵攻後は、徴兵のため18〜60歳の男性の出国を原則禁止している。
第一次世界大戦中のロシア革命でロシア帝国が崩壊するとウクライナの民族自決運動が起こった。1917年、国際的に認め
られたウクライナ人民共和国が宣言されたが、ロシア内戦などを経てソビエト連邦の一部となった。第二次世界大戦では
独ソ戦の激戦地となった。第二次世界大戦後、ソ連は占領したポーランド東部を併合する代わりにポーランドとドイツの
国境をオーデル・ナイセ線へ移動させた。ウクライナ人が多く住むガリツィア地方はウクライナ西部に、その後のソビエト
連邦の崩壊に伴い、1991年にウクライナは独立国となった。
旧ソ連圏への影響力回復と領土拡張を目指すロシアのプーチン政権は、ウクライナ国内の親ロシア派を通じた内政干渉や
領土蚕食を進め、2014年3月のロシアはクリミアを併合、2014年4月からロシア人の住むドンバス地域で戦闘が始まった。
2021年3月からロシアとの間で緊張が高まり、2022年2月、ロシアのウクライナ侵攻が開始された。
Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest European country after Russia, which borders it
to the east and northeast. It also borders Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west, and
Romania and Moldova to the southwest; with a coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov to the south
and southeast. Kyiv is the nation's capital and largest city, followed by Kharkiv, Dnipro and Odesa. Ukraine's
official language is Ukrainian; Russian is also widely spoken, especially in the east and south.
Ukraine gained independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved, and declared itself neutral. A new constitution
was adopted in 1996. A series of mass demonstrations, known as the Euromaidan, led to the establishment of
a new government in 2014 after a revolution. Russia then unilaterally annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, and
pro-Russian unrest culminated in a war in the Donbas between Russian-backed separatists and government forces
in eastern Ukraine. Since the outbreak of war with Russia, Ukraine has continued to seek closer ties with the United
States, European Union, and NATO. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Due to its extensive fertile land, pre-war Ukraine was one of the largest grain exporters in the world.
It is in the process of joining the European Union and has applied to join NATO.
