Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. The warm
waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur and bathing in the Blue Lagoonis reputed to help
some people suffering from skin diseases. The water temperature in the bathing and swimming
area of the lagoon averages 40 C. The lagoon is fed by the water output of the nearby geothermal
power plant. Superheated water is vented from the ground near a lava flow and used to run
turbines that generate electricity. After going through the turbines, the steam and hot water
passes through a heat exchanger to provide and support for a municipal hot-water warming
system.

A new Blue Lagoon-Clinic opened in June 2005. Modern look and practical solutions characterize
its design. The lagoon area is designed with the needs of the Clinic in mind and includes a large
indoor pool and outdoor lagoon. In 2007 Blue Lagoon Clinic received an award for its architecture
from the Association of Icelandic Arcitects. The accommodation features 15 double/twin rooms.
The rooms are well designed and spacious with a private bathroom and a porch. Total facilities
are smoke-free.

乗り換え地点のコペンハーゲンでチェックインしたスーツケースがアイスランドまで積み込まれなかったため、
アイスランド・ケプラヴィーク国際空港で、デンマークの空港まで調査を依頼していたので時間はとっくに
10時を過ぎていた。しかしブルーラグーンクリニックホテルへのタクシーは辛抱強く待っていてくれた。
まわりはまだ明るく、そこで見た光景は溶岩で固められた延々と続く大地であった。丁度、ハワイ島の溶岩
台地のようである。スヴァルトセンギ地熱発電所から立ち上る蒸気は航空機の窓からもよく見えていた。

スヴァルトセンギ地熱発電所は文字通り蒸気熱利用の発電所で、この島全体の電力および温水による地域
暖房をまかなっている。ブルーラグーンは世界的に有名な温泉リゾートだが、温泉が湧き出ているのではなく、
地熱発電所からの約70度の湯を組み入れている。入るととても気持ちがよい（日本以外の国では入浴時に
水着を着用する）。入湯料は23ユーロであるが、15歳までのユースと67歳以上の高齢者は７ユーロとなる。
中にリックサックまで入れることが出来るハイテクのロッカーがあるので安心である。

ブルーラグーンクリニックホテルは、ブルーラグーン温泉から徒歩数分のところにある。専門医師が訪問し、
皮膚病の治療にあたる。宿泊施設内には15の客室があり、マッサージ室、フィットネスクラブがある。無論、
施設内は全面禁煙である。スタッフは全員、親切である。
