Wat Pho

Wat Pho, as known as Wat Phra Chetuphon or The Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is a Buddhist temple
located next to the Grand place.

Just behind the opulent extravagance of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha stands Wat Phra Chetuphon,
which is more commonly known by its old name of Wat Po. Most western tourists don't get past the temple's
huge reclining Buddha, but there is actually much more to see than the one colossal statue.

ワットポー(寝釈迦寺)

1788年にラーマ1世によって建立されたバンコク最古の寺院。学問修行の施設として建てられ、タイ式マッサージの
総本山としても知られている。巨大な涅槃仏（ねはんぶつ）があることで有名なので、涅槃寺と呼ばれている。
涅槃仏とは釈迦が亡くなる様子を表した仏像であり、タイの各地で見ることができる。この寺の礼拝堂に横たわる
涅槃仏の全長は50メートルほどもあり、全身は金箔でおおわれて光り輝いている。その足の裏には、仏教の世界観が
緻密な螺鈿細工で描かれている。涅槃寺の本尊は金箔が施されたブロンズの仏像で、その台座にはラマ１世の遺骨が
納められている。

ワット・アルンはアユタヤー時代に創建され、トンブリー王朝の守護寺院であった。現存する寺院はチャクリー
王朝時代に築かれたとい言われる。大仏塔脇の本堂はラマ２世が建立した。王宮の対岸にあるトンブリー（Thon Buri ）で
最初に朝日が差し込む場所であったことから、インドの暁の神アルナにちなんで名づけられた。きらびやかな王宮の
ゴールドとは対照的な落ち着いたシルバーを基調に建てられている。現在使用されている10バーツ硬貨にも描かれている。

ワット・アルンのシンボル、大仏塔は何万枚もの中国陶器の皿でモザイク模様に装飾されている。太陽の光が当たると
独特の輝きと美しさを見せている。台座はラーマキエンの鬼とインドラの猿神が支えている。シヴァ神の住む
カイラーサ山をかたどったもの。７５メートルある大仏塔への階段は急峻で登り下りは命がけである。
