東寺は、京都市南区九条町にある仏教寺院。真言宗の根本道場であり、真言宗全体の総本山でもある。「教王護国寺」
とも呼ばれる。本尊は薬師如来。 東寺は平安京鎮護のための官寺として建立が始められた後、嵯峨天皇より空海
（弘法大師）に下賜され、真言密教の根本道場として栄えた。中世以降の東寺は弘法大師に対する信仰の高まりと
ともに「お大師様の寺」として庶民の信仰を集めるようになり、21世紀の今日も京都の代表的な名所として存続して
いる。昭和9年（1934年）に国の史跡に指定、平成6年（1994年）12月には「古都京都の文化財」として世界遺産に
登録された。

東寺の五重塔は仏の都、京都のランドマークタワー。 その高さは約55メートル、木造の建築物としては日本一の
高さを誇る。 五重塔は、仏陀の遺骨を安置するストゥーパが起源とされ、東寺の五重塔には、弘法大師空海が唐より
持ち帰った仏舎利を納めている。

Toji (East Temple) is a Buddhist temple of Shingon sect in Kyoto. It once had a partner, Saiji (West Temple)
and, together, they stood alongside the Rashomon, gate to the Heian capital. It was formally known as
functioned as a temple providing protection for the nation. Toji is located in Minami-ku in the southwest of
Kyoto Station.The Five-story pagoda of Toji stands 54.8 meters high, and is the tallest wooden tower in
Japan. It dates from the Edo period, when it was rebuilt by order of the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu.
The pagoda has been, and continues to be, a symbol of Kyoto.
