The point just below the tunnel exit is the steepest point.


The Takaotozan Railway operates a funicular line and a ropeway to Mount Takao, a popular destination for mountain
trekking among Tokyo residents. The company was founded in September 1921. The funicular line, commonly
known as the Takao Tozan Cable line, is the steepest railway line in Japan, with a 608 (31°) elevation at maximum.

Distance: 1.0 km, Vertical interval: 271 m
The cars are connected at opposite ends of the cable, so they move synchronously and counterweight each other.
It is said that the construction fee was more expensive per kilometer when compared to other Japanese railway lines
(including the shinkansen).

ケーブルカーの歴史

昭和2年	ケーブルカー開通　営業開始
昭和19年	企業整備令（戦時体制）により　営業休止
昭和24年	ケーブルカー　営業再開
昭和43年	大型ケーブルカーを導入
平成20年	新型ケーブルカー入替
平成26年	巻上機更新

　ケーブルカーは昭和２年に営業が開始され、戦時中に一時休止したが、戦後昭和２４年にいち早く復活した。昭和４３年に
全自動制御の近代的ケーブルカーに生まれ変わり、高尾山を訪れる多くの人達の足となっている。

最も急な所は３１度１８分、ケーブルカーの線路では日本一の急勾配。

使用しているロープは安全率が十倍以上のものが使われている。万一切れたとしても、わずか２メートルほど滑っただけで
止められる、強力な自動ブレーキがレールを挟み、安全に停止ができる構造になっている。
