Australia is a country in the southern hemisphere comprising the continental mainland, the island of
Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.



Australia is one of the most laissez-faire free market economies. A per capita GDP is slightly higher in
Australia than that of UK, Germany, and France in term purchasing power parity. The country ranked
third in the 2007 Human Development Index.



In 2007, there were about 10,000,000 people employed with an unemployment rate of 4,6%.
Agriculture and natural resources account for 3% and 5% of GDP respectively; however, they
contribute substantially to export performance. The largest export markets are Japan, followed China,
the United States, South Korea and New Zealand.
