Taj Tashi
Taj Tashi Hotel Resort-and-Palace is located in the heart of the Thimphu Valley, and is a gateway

The Taj Tashi is the only hotel, that designates a non-smoking guest room in Thimphu, Bhutan.
The number of total guest rooms is 65. An actual number of the non-smoking room is 53, versus
the smoking room is 53. All rooms are smokefree on the first floor ( In the North American
and Jaoanese scheme: it means the second floor ), third floor and fifth floor. There are mixed
smoking and non-smoking rooms on the second and fourth floor. The percentage of smoking
rooms to total rooms is 22.6%.
Amankora Thimphu
Amankora is the word of combining the Sanskrit word for ‘peace’ with kora ‘circuilar pilgrimage’
in the Bhutanese language. Amankora is a series of lodges across the central and western valleys
of Bhutan. Amankora Thimphu, raised up in a blue-pine forest of the Motithang area, sits close to
the Bhutan's capital and traditional shops.

in Bhutanese hospitality. The hotel is designed to suit business-oriented clients and offers modest, clean

Bhutan Suites is designed for the discerning traveler or occupant, and readily provides for both

Almost all major hotels in Thimphu we checked are not protected a hotel guest from the residual
hazard of the tobacco-toxin, except in Taji Tashi. Why the hotel accommodation should be non-smoking?
The answer: it is because of the risk of third hand smoke.
I was rather surprised that almost all hotels in Thimphu allowed to smoke inside of the guest rooms.
Since Bhutan is the only country to prohibit to sell tobacco throughout the world, this decision was
rather unexpected. Many hotel managers in Bhutan are afraid to lose a smoking guest from abroad.
That may be the main reason to allow smoking inside the guest room. Fortunately, Bhutan law
prohibits putting light on cigarette in restaurants and bars. Therefore, healthy minded tourists do
not feel uncomfortable and do not have senses of impending danger from the tobacco toxin.
I advise to recognize the fact that residue on clothing, furniture and wallpaper can react with
a common indoor pollutant to generate dangerous chemicals called tobacco-specific nitrosamines.
Beware of Third-Hand Smoke
Taj Tashi Hotel Resort-and-Palace is the high-grade hotel with a traditionally built in Bhutanese style.
It is located nearby a city shop. A guest room is well furnished. warmed and very attractive. This is
the only hotel in Bhutan, which designates a non-smoking room.
This hotel is probably the best hotel in this country. A simple and elegantly designed Amankora Thimphu
is worth to stay for a single traveler, or a couple, since all rooms in this hotel have a double-bed with
a bath tab in the same large space, next to the bed. This hotel does not comply with a person
who seeks a non-smoking surroundings, like as other hotels, which conduct the similar setup.
Druk Hotel in Thimphu is located in the center of the city center and very convenient to explore
the centuries-old street. The hotel fee is very reasonable, and you can stay in a presidential suite
with the fee of US$171. Bhutan Suites, Peaceful Resort, Hotel Jumolhari, Hotel Phuntsho Pelri and
Hotel Tandin are not complied with tobacco-toxin hazard.

今回のホテル調査で驚かされたのは、その数は限られているものの、欧米の一流ホテルをはるかに上回る
設備の豪華さであった。ホテルゲストの大部分は裕福な白人層と思われるが、長期間かけてブータンの
仏教伝統と豊かな自然を楽しんでいるかのようである。ブータンはタバコの販売を完全に禁止しているが、
経済的に外国人旅行者に依存するところが大きいため、喫煙規制に関しては宿泊施設を除外し、その規制に
ついては責任者の判断に委ねている。意外だったのは、首都ティンプーのホテルではタージ・タシ以外には
禁煙客室は存在せず、すべてのホテル客室で喫煙できることであった。ホテル担当者は喫煙者がチェツク
アウトした後に部屋を換気し、場合により消臭スプレーを使用すると話しているが、タバコの有害物質は
壁やカーテン、寝具などに長期間付着し、宿泊客の健康を損なう。
ティンプーのホテルはタジ・タシ以外を除いて喫煙対策が全くなされていない。タバコの三次的被害を
回避したい人はタージ・タシの禁煙客室を予約するしか方法はない。喫煙者も滞在できるホテルにアマンコーラ、
ドゥクホテル、ピースフル・レゾートなどがある。
