　山手線が環状運転を始め、11月1日で100年となる。明治期に生糸を運ぶために誕生した路線は、時代の
　ニーズに合わせて、丸くつながり、1日約100万人を運ぶ都心の大動脈に成長した。1周34.5キロを59分で
　つなぐ環状線の変遷をグラフィックでたどる。
　
　1872年、日本最初の鉄道が新橋―横浜間で開業した。その後、私鉄の日本鉄道が上野を拠点に群馬方面に
　北上する路線を開業。当時、主な輸出品だった生糸の産地と東京を鉄路で結んだ。

　ただ、上野―新橋を含む現在の山手線の東側はすでに市街地で、土地の買収が難しく、南北はつながらない
　ままだった。 そこで、現在の山手線の西側の丘陵地帯に鉄道が計画され、1885年、山手線の原形となる
　「品川線」が品川―赤羽間で開業した。

　当時の鉄道は「ひと」よりも、「モノ」の輸送がメインだった。品川線の開通によって、主要な輸出品の
　北関東産の生糸や絹織物を、貿易港の横浜に直接運ぶことが出来るようになった。

　品川から新宿を経て田端までの西半分は武蔵野台地の上を走り、田端から東京を経て品川までの東半分は
　崖下にあたる低地を走る。台地上は目黒川や神田川などが谷を刻んで起伏が多いため、盛り土や切り通し
　で越えていく。駅の標高（レール面）は最も低い品川が2.9メートルで、最も高い代々木は38.7メートル。
　駅間約10キロの両駅の高低差は35.8メートルにも及ぶ。

　正式な線路名称で言えば、品川―新宿―田端間のみ。正式名称は「やまのてせん」。現在、1本の電車は
　1日平均12周している。

　The Yamanote Line is a railway loop service in Tokyo, operated by the JR East. It is one of Tokyo's
　busiest and most important lines, connecting most of Tokyo's major stations and urban centres,
　including Marunouchi, the Yurakucho/Ginza area, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and 　　
　Ueno, with all but two of its 30 stations connecting to other railway or underground (subway) lines.

　Trains run from 04:26 to 01:04 the next day at intervals as short as 2 minutes during peak periods 　
　and four minutes at other times. A complete loop takes 59 to 65 minutes. All trains stop at each station.

　It is the only Yamanote Line station opened in the 21st century.
