The Tranz Coastal Train

The Tranz Coastal train journey travels between the port of Picton and Christchurch, the largest city in
South Island. This journey is a scenic chain of New Zealand, with the Kaikoura mountain ranges on one
side of your train and the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline on the other. One of the world's most scenic
train journeys. During the trip course, there are 22 tunnels, and 175 bridges.

A blue sky, a clean fresh air, a dry refreshing breeze. Everything was so perfect.

This place is famous for the production of wine, and the grape fields are seen along the railway.

鉄道 TRANZ COSTAL SCENICの旅

ニュージランド南島クライストチャーチから北島オークランドまで（またはその逆）鉄道で縦断するコースがある。
クライストチャーチから南島北端のピクトンまでの海岸路線を経由、クック海峡をフェリーで横断、北島ウエリントン
からオークランドまで幹線長距離列車を利用する。しかし、途中下車しないでも目的地に着くまで丸２日かかる。

今回はクライストチャーチからブレナムまで乗車した。展望用の窓なし車両は１両連結されている。スーツケース
など大きい荷物は貨物車に収納されるので、飛行機に乗る場合と同じくをチェックインする。このとき日本人団体客
の一員と間違えられてウエリントン行きのタグを取り付けられてしまった。すぐ気がつきこれをブレナム行きの
タグに差し替える。もし気付いていなかったら大変なことになっていた。

列車はクライストチャーチ駅を定刻に出発した。ニュージランド特有の草原と羊の群れが目に入る。しばらく
単調な景色が続くが、Oaro を過ぎると進行右手に南太平洋の海が大きく広がる。きらきらと光り輝いている。
やがて鯨、イルカ、オットセイなど多様な海洋動物を観察する基地、カイコウラに到着する。10分間ほどの停車
時間を利用して駅の外に出る。高くさえた真っ青な空だ。海からのそよ風が本当に心地よい。遠くに白雪を抱く
Seaward KaikouraRange の山並みと Kaikoura Peninsula を右手に望むことが出来た。

列車は２時間以上の間、どこまでもブルーの美しい南太平洋の海岸沿いを走る。展望車から眺める海の青さは
格別だ。やがてオットセイのコロニーが見えたが、あっという間に後方に消えた。明るい海辺の景色は続いた。
再び内陸に入りグラスメア湖（Lake Grassmere）に到着した。ここは塩水湖で干上がった白い塩が線路間際まで
広がっていた。

列車は迂回しながら南島北端、海に近いブドウ産地、マールボロ台地に入る。乾燥した土地には一面、ぶどう園が
広がる。ここマールボロ地方はニュージランド最大のワイン産地なのである。その中心の町、筆者の鉄道旅行の終点、
ブレナムはもうすぐだ。
