English and Maori are the official languages of New Zealand. No smoking sign written in Maori.

to struggle against being lost.

The ratio of a non-smoking guest room to the total hotel rooms was calculated,
based on the on-the-spot investigation.

ニュージランド喫煙規制調査の旅へ

ニュージランドの大都市から小さな町まで喫煙規制情報をくまなく調査するため、観光客の訪れないようなレストラン、
カフェでも食事し、ホテルに宿泊してみた。南島の大部分を周ったので、使用したレンタカーの走行距離は2611キロ
にも及んだ。至る所に「Smokefree Area」、「No Smoking」の標識が見られ、閉鎖空間内での喫煙は行うべき
でないとの国民のコンセンサスが明確に読み取れた。

アイルランドでは、それがあまりにも当たり前との意識が強いせいかレストラン、カフェ、ホテル、ゲストハウス
には禁煙標識の無いものが多かった。それに対し、ニュージランドで禁煙標識がほとんどの施設に表示されている。
その理由は観光客、とくに中国、韓国、日本からの人々を意識しているせいかも知れない。事実、日本人、特に
中国人団体客の数の多さは想像以上のものであった。
