No trip to Norway is complete without getting on the water. Whether you
base your travels by a car,
a ferry is the means of transportation to get you from here-to-there in
the most scenic spots
in Norway.

Fodnes to Mannheller car ferry

The village of Solvorn sits directly across the fjord from the village
of Ornes, where the famous
12th-century Urnes Stave Church is located. The village is the site of
the historic Walaker Hotel,
dating back to about 1650. There has been a regular ferry route from Solvorn
to Ornes, across
the fjord, since 1859. From 1963 until 1990, there was also a regular ferry
route from Solvorn to
Aerdalstangen, about 35 kilometres down the fjord. The village had its
heyday when the fjord was
the main thoroughfare for transportation in the region. Since that time,
car transportation has
become more important that fjord travel, and the Norwegian County-Road
55
was built on the other side of the mountains.

Urnes Stave Church is a 12th-century stave church at Ornes. It sits on
the eastern side of the fjord,
directly across the fjord from the village of Solvorn. It has been owned
by Society for the Preservation
of Norwegian Ancient Monuments, since 1881. In 1979, the Urnes Stave Church
was listed as a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO.
