Calgary
Calgary's dense business area comprises the bulk of the downtown community.
It is a core of skyscrapers,
for a commercial use. Some of the tallest buildings in western Canada, and a few of the tallest in the country,
are in Calgary.
In 2008, downtown Calgary had a resident population of 7,900. Residents
in this community had a median
household income of $30,000 in 2005 with 41.4% of the population reported
as low income residents. As of
2006, 44.3% of the residents were immigrants. A proportion of 99.7% of
the buildings were condominiums
or apartments, and 95.9% of the housing was used for renting.

The Stephen Avenue is a major pedestrian mall in downtown, calgary. It
is known a fine restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars.

Hyatt Regency Calgary has a 355 rooms, of which smoking is 5, consisting
of 1.4% of total rooms.
Fairmont Hotel Palliser, Calgary has 405 rooms. Ten rooms are smoking with
the rate of 2.5% of total.
Delta Bow Valley Calgary has a total of 394 rooms. All are smoke-free.
Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel has 374 guest rooms and 10 suite rooms. All rooms are non-smoking.
The Westin Calgary has a total of 525 rooms. All are smoke-free.
Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire has 323 rooms in total. No smoking allowed inside of the hotel.

カルガリーはスタンピードで有名だが、筆者は1962年にカルガリーを訪れてスタンピード(カーボーイ暴れ馬大会）
を見物したが、予め購入していた指定席が柱の陰で、見にくいながらも大観衆とともに、ロデォショーを楽しんだ。
その日の朝は、カルガリーに入る幹線道路の両側には地元の人々が、私の車のイリノイ州ライセンスプレート名を
大きな声で読み上げて歓迎してくれたことなど、昨日のように思い出される。
Calgary is famous for stampede. I visited there in summer of 1962 and saw the stampede (Carboy Rampage
Tournament). Unfortunately, the reserved seat I had purchased in advance
were behind the pillars, and
therefore, it was somewhat difficult to see the whole picture. However,
I enjoyed the rodeo show with
a large audience. That morning, local people on both sides of the main road into Calgary, they read aloud
the Illinois car liscence plate number, welcoming guests from the United
State. It reminds me of it happened
just yesterday.
 1962 Calgary Stampede 50th Anniversary
そのカルガリーが50年の歳月を経て、石油・天然ガス産業、農業、ハイテク産業などの進展とともに高層ビルの
林立する都市に生まれ変わっていた。ダウンタウンから郊外にはトラムも走っている。夏（6月−8月）の平均気温
は16℃で快適であるが、冬(11月−3月）の平均気温は-9℃と非常に寒い。
一年前のオンタリオ州訪問に続いて今回はブリティシュコロンビア州とアルバータ州を旅行した。その目的は最近の
喫煙規制を兼ね、医療事情、施設の視察が含まれていた。目にしたのは、完成したすばらしい医療施設であった。
更に驚かされたのは病院が自己の敷地内で自家発電していたことだ。外部の電力には依存しない、その体制には
感服した。タバコ規制も定着しており、一般の人の目にタバコが見えないようにした取り組みは、健康社会を目指す
姿勢を鮮明にしていた。ホテルでも喫煙ブースは完全に消失し、いまやほとんどの施設で喫煙者用の客室が完廃され、
屋内全面禁煙体制が構築されている。取材を通して、自己管理できない喫煙者を「哀れみの目で見る」、そうした
姿勢を読み取ることが出来た。旅行中お会いした親切なカナダ人に、この席でお礼を申し上げたい。
